The Rule Against Emotion

A Mission Explained
Political language
Manus explains what the phrase “mainland campaign” means and corrects Steven when he treats it as a deliberate erasure of Ireland. He insists that the young man must not become emotional if he is to think clearly.
The lesson is both political and operational. Manus wants Steven to interpret the task through a disciplined frame rather than through anger or personal feeling.
A recruit under pressure
Steven listens, but his questions reveal that the explanation does not settle his unease. He is a teenager living in a squat, working for low wages, and dependent on Manus for access to the group and the mission.
The instruction to suppress emotion also foreshadows the difficulty of the operation. Steven’s feelings will return through his connection with Sabina and his awareness of the crowded public place where he is expected to leave the case.
The Guitar Case Prepared

A Case for the Assignment
Practical arrangements
Manus tells Steven that the guitar is ready and arranges for him to carry the case. Their conversation presents the operation as a matter of logistics, giving the teenager little space to reconsider its purpose.
Steven continues to work at the restaurant and attend the club, maintaining the appearance of an ordinary young man. The case’s presence links these separate parts of his life to the mission.
Two futures converge
During the same period, Steven meets Sabina and arranges to see her on Sunday. The meeting gives the day a personal promise that conflicts with Manus’s schedule.
The operation and the date occupy the same place and time in Steven’s mind. He is being asked to act as an instrument of a political plan just as he begins to imagine a life based on mutual affection.
The Crowd Splits

An Order No Longer Obeyed
A public alarm
A police unit restrains a young goth as the crowd hears that a guitar case has been isolated for bomb disposal. Steven recognizes the case as connected to Manus and understands that he has reached the moment when he must decide whether to complete the plan.
The gathering crowd changes the mission from an abstract political operation into an immediate threat to people who look like his own community. Sabina is also waiting nearby.
Steven chooses another path
Steven carries the case away from the canal and hides it behind a bookstall. He then returns to meet Sabina and suggests that they leave Camden for a film.
His refusal breaks the operation’s momentum without bringing immediate clarity about Manus or what will follow. It is a decisive act of conscience, but it remains private and uncertain rather than a public declaration.
